I've used a number of these shakes, so maybe I'll start reviewing them.... I guess "The Kitchen" is as good a place as any to put them.
The latest one I'm using is Six Star Body Fuel Advanced Whey Protein Shake This is the "Advanced Whey Protein" shake by Six Star. It is widely available, even at Walmart, and is about $15 or so for a 2lb tub. I'm using the vanilla variety (it also comes in chocolate). For my shakes, I always use 1% Borden milk, the kind with "extra protein" - which is marketing-speak for "Extra cow pus!" I figure theres about ~12 grams of protein in the amount of milk I use, combined with the ~21 grams in the shake scoop (I use a slightly heaping scoop). Heres the stats on the Six Star Whey Protein: Calories: 110 Calories from fat: 20 Total Fat 2g Saturated Fat: 1g Trans Fat 0g Cholesterol: 40mg Total Carbohydrate: 2g Dietary Fiber: 0g Sugars: 2g Protein: 20g Calcium: 140mg Iron: 0.3mg Sodium: 55mg It includes 1.3 grams of Six Star's "Infuse" additive, which is basically a Creatine/essential fatty acids supplement: Creatine monohydrate, guar gum, glutamine alpha-ketoglutarate, glutamine peptides, L-glutamine, L-leuscine, L-valine, and L-isoleucine. I'm almost done with this tub, so a follow-up review of the flavor of the chocolate variety should come soon. Pros: 20 grams of protein in every scoop. It doesn't taste that bad provided you use milk instead of water. It has a good amount of protein, and has common supplements added to it making it a pretty good value. Cons: The jug flat out recommends you drink two servings three times a day for maximum results. I can't drink that much of this crap. The following quote found on the label is not true: "Tastes great!" Like all other protein shakes I've tried, it tastes absolutely horrible when mixed with water. If I were to drink the maximum recommended amount, I would have to drink it mixed with water, as milk is just too filling. One shake with milk and I'll be full for a couple hours. If you don't want to take Creatine at all, go with something else. I ain't a fan of it myself. I have been having cramps, which I usually only get when taking creatine. They don't last long, so it's not that big a deal for me. |

Are you lactose intolerant? (you should not be cramping) Why are you taking creatine (or any synthesized energy supplements for that matter), are you trying to bulk up?

I haven't taken creatine on purpose (as a supplement) since high school (This stuff just happens to have it in it as an additive). I had the same type of muscle cramps back then when I was taking it.
I'm not lactose intolerant. I lost a lot of weight on my new diet, and my goal is to at least gain the weight back in muscle. |

My recommendation: (A1) Eat high quality steak (something from the Tenderloin group; maybe "Medallion's" which are 3 to 4 ounces) no later than 5:30 PM as the main ingredient of your evening meal. Drink plenty of water during the day. (A2) Raise your cardiovascular rate to within 15% of maximum for your present physical condition for 15 minutes (does not include warm-up time) each day by jumping-jacks or swimming. You should be perspiring halfway through and breathing like a horse who's been on a gallop. (B1) On top of that, every other day workout for 20 minutes, switching muscle groups each time, and doing it at least 4 hours off from your daily conditioning. Working the muscle group properly should ache by the end (but not to the point of cramping if you 'make a muscle' afterwards), and should recover from the ache by the next morning. It is important to deal with both PT (A & B) elements. They assist each other in expanding capacity. This whole routine should lend to increasing your muscle mass without neccessarily giving you a 'cut' look, and do it fairly quickly... within 2 months you should easily see growth that has occurred. If you were to keep this up for 7 to 9 months you would probably need to buy a new wardrobe of clothes because of the increase in size. If you wish, once you get to the general muscle mass you want, you can get into a 'sculpting' routine to shape and cut the individual muscles. Additionally, remember if you have a great increase of muscle mass but keep your body extra lean, your veins will migrate to the surface. Some people like it, others don't; but it will make you a bit more susceptible to surface wounds that would be a magnitude more serious than usual. Note: Never do "sit-ups", always do "leg-lifts". |

So why no sit-ups? I couldn't do sit-ups for a long time anyway, with my GERD problem and all (all that sloshing back and forth would give me reflux).
I was thinking of getting some inexpensive pull up/leg lift station like the Weider 200 Tower (Sportsman's Guide usually has them for like $130 shipped). BTW, the chocolate version of this protein shake tastes a lot better than the vanilla, but it doesn't seem to mix as well for some reason. |

The whole point behind sit-ups obviously is to strengthen the abdominals. The act has one 'jerking' up in a spinal curl action, while at the same time compressing the diaphragm, and that is not generally good as an exercise. Leg-lifts are a smooth, controlled muscular exercise that allows complete control over difficulty (slow or fast, with/without weights), extension (how high or low), and diversity (legs together, apart, scissor, alternating split, T-spilt rise, etc.). Take it from the Gymnast bunch... they never do sit-ups, just leg-lifts. |

Funny how I think you and I are in a very similar situation right now Duke. I've been weight training in an effort to reshape my body. Basically, I lost 55 lbs, but was still flabby. Slowly that's changing. My arms and chest in particular are really starting to show a tremendous difference. What I am having trouble with however is getting rid of that last little bit of 'spare tire' I've got in the lower abdominal area. The love handles in particular are just not wanting to go away. Any recommendations?

I know you're talking to Duke, but I'll stick my big mouth in here (as usual) as Duke hasn't responded yet... Long laps in a pool (a lot of women know this secret). Do not cheat (DON'T bend your legs at all), use your rigid legs as an extension of your feet to propel yourself. If you don't cheat, in short order you'll feel the burn. the whole lower 'trunk' should tighten up from this. If you look at a professional swimmer's lower abs and hips you'll see what I mean. |

I blame my weight loss on:
1: Not eating any junk at all anymore. 2: My metabolism. 3: The 15 minutes of cardio a day Rich is trying to kill me with. |

OK now it is nearly a year later.... So how did all this information help or not help you Duke? Just wondering. I hope that what you were trying to do worked out for you and Steve? Are you 'sexy' now?
