Geeeeeeez...
I got my 11 year old son one of these for Christmas, and I must say it is one thoroughbred machine (and yes, I had to pay some scab more than store price for it).
The juice: 60 GB HDD, Cell Broadband Engine (1.8 trillion calculations per second) pumping at upto 3.2 GHz, mem bandwidth of 25.6 GBps, Ethernet 1000BASE-T, Wireless G, Memory Stick/SD/CF reader slots, Bluetooth multi-axis controllers, and plays BD/DVD/CD-ROM/CD discs, and more.
Whiner points: It's very heavy (can be used as a blunt weapon in a pinch), puts out a bit of heat, and only comes with a crappy composite video/stereo output plug.

I'm debating buying a PS3, as it seems like the most economical choice for a Bluray player, especially considering its other capabilities. I want to buy the 60gb model (which has been discontinued) because of the on-board Emotion Engine (PS2 backward compatability chip). I don't know if I'll be able to find one anywhere, but we'll see.
Rich, how does your son like his? It seems like the list of worthwhile games is growing and with Bluray appearing to be on the verge of winning the format war, it seems like a good bet. |

He loves it! That's the exact model (60 GB) he has. There's not too many PS3 games I will let him have yet (the violence thing).
He has: Ridge Racer 7 *
Stuntman Ignition
Spiderman 3
Sonic the Hedgehog
BUT... he also has 49 PS2 games from the past, and 23 PS1 games
* The graphics on this one is unbelievable, and really good.

My son, got one of these (PS3's) for less than $400 so I think he did not get ripped off, then again I don't play video games. I know he is happy about what he got and for the price. When he gets home ....which will be SOON!!!! (a few days/or a week or two) I am sure he will like what he bought. I will let ya' know!
Yes, he shops online so I don't know where he got this deal at. I do know that the HD is at least 60GB and that's about all I know. I will find out more when he gets home....
PS: I know my contribution to this thread is null and void right now...whateva'

Wally -
It's not really a 'standard' model issue, it's a 'generation' issue; and it's not really if it can play it, it's if the particular game would have a problem and if the game manufacturer will rewrite some of the code to be download to the 2nd generation PS3 (they very well may not if the game is no longer produced, which amounts to M-A-N-Y PS1 and PS2 games).
The PS3 with the 20GB and 60GB HDD were the 1st generation to come out. They are long gone as they sold out immediately. The 20GB model had a smaller HDD, no card reader, and no WiFi. The 60GB model had all the extra goodies.
The PS3 with the 40GB and 80GB HDD were the 2nd generation to come out. Even though the first generation sold out, Sony was essentially losing money on the machine (for more reasons than 1), so in the second generation (now that they knew they had a big seller), the system had to be made cheaper (it was a lot more expensive then their competitors). So in the second generation, they removed the Emotion Engine [hardware] and worked on code expansion [software] to emulate the EE. The problem with that is each game maker of PS1 or PS2 games might have to rework some code (a rewrite) to be downloaded to make those games work properly. It amounts to software emulation (compatibility based on coding, if present) in the 2nd version vs a hardware chip (100% compatibility) in the 1st version.
All-in-all the PS3 60GB (from the first generation run) would be the best choice, but it was also the most expensive.
The 20GB and 40GB models were for people that could not afford the full blown version of PS3, yet still wanted one.
Why did Sony do this to the 2nd generation PS3's? Basically for 2 reasons:
(1) To date -
The PS3 has sold about 9.43 million units wordwide (the most expensive)
3.70 million units in the US
The XBOX 360 has sold about 16.64 million units worldwide
10.64 million units in the US
The Wii has sold about 20.05 million units wordwide (the least expensive)
8.65 million units in the US
The 1st generation PS3 came out at -
$599 for the 60GB model
$499 for the 20GB model
The 2nd generation PS3 came out at -
$499 for the 80GB model
$399 for the 40GB model
The Wii has sold the most because it is the cheapest (but it's not even in the same universe as PS3 or XBOX 360). The XBOX 360 is very good, but it's no PS3. So why does any of that matter? Because the name of the game is profits. If you sell more units, you sell more games, if you sell more of both you make more money. Profits trump game platform power of your system. So they started out as king (in power) and had a strong hit... from those that could afford it, but now they need to bump up the profits to make the whole strategy work, hence cutting out some of the power and making the machine cheaper, thereby increasing sales.
(2) It seems that going forward less and less people will bitch about not being able to play every single game ever made for the PlayStation system (everybody is always hunting for the next, newest game), so they play the odds and crunch the profit numbers.
P.S.: My son (who has the PS3 60GB unit) says "The PS3 R-O-C-K-S !"

..and just think, I'm not even interested in gaming.
BTW, if you ever get a Wii, play with it in the garage with an old crappy TV (it uses low-rez graphics anyway). TONS of the 'Wiimotes' have gone flying and done unbelievable damage. I like this example best: http://www.wiihaveaproblem.com/show_article.php?id=360 or maybe this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu3GaxZxYRk or even a short compilation of images like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6-PPvfF7MI

Well, I now have Mortal Kombat for the Wii and it is very, very fun. With the wiimotes, you actually do the half circles with the controller + press a button instead of doing the half circle on the controller. totally fun and addictive. Also, the Konquest part of the game is a lot of fun. The console is Wii-mproving a lot!

I have the Wii hooked up in my bedroom and trying to play it while my girlfriend is sleeping is hilarious. With all the mattress springs squeaking, my neighbors must think I'm a stallion. (which to be fair, I am)
Anyway, apparently the 80gb PS3 is now being discontinued (very likely because a new package with a larger HDD and rumble controllers will be released soon.) I'm going to wait until at least then to get one...though I must admit, my gadget lust is getting the better of me. I keep chanting 'pay off stupid car...Australia trip...new house...' to keep myself prioritized. Ahhh...screw it, we all know I'm gonna buy one. |

A few weeks ago, I bought a 60gb Playstation 3 on ebay. I already have an XBOX 360 and a Wii, so my girlfriend was less than amused when I explained why I needed another game machine; but it's my body I sell on the street for the money, so what Steve wants, Steve gets.
I hate to say it, but I'm kind of disappointed in the system overall. I find the interface a little clunky and the mandatory installation of games is kind of annoying. More than anything though, is when the system won't let me multitask. When I'm forced to download a 150 MB patch for a game, I'd like to at least be able to navigate around the menus...anything other than stare at a progress bar. Also, copying a file over the network requires the full attention of the system as well, so I get to wait while I copy a 4-8 GB video file over my wireless-G network...fun! Speaking of video playback. I have several 1080p WMV movies (VC-1 encoded) that playback with no audio on the PS3. Apparently, the audio codec isn't supported, so I'm S.O.L. Maybe they'll add it with a future firmware update, but seeing as they'd have to license it from Microsoft, I'm guessing not. I haven't really played many games for the PS3 just yet, but at quick glance it appears that the library is basically the same as the XBOX 360. I'm actually kind of amazed that they haven't pushed hard to score more exclusive titles, though I'm sure in time they'll get a few good ones. I installed yellow dog linux on it, which I thought might solve my video playback problem, but the wireless network doesn't seem to work (I've followed the instructions to the letter, but nada.) and the 1080p resolution leaves a big fat border around my screen. In typical Linux fashion, I'm sure I could resolve these problems with some totally complicated ass backwards way, but I just don't care anymore. I will say having a Blu-ray player is cool, but I'm not buying those movies at $30 a pop. |

You really thought Sony would support MS ventures?
It's hard to believe you have a genuine 1st Gen 60 GB PS3 and are not in love with it.
Yes dear, you have to wait while loading; no dear, you can not brush your teeth while sitting on the bowl.
-WHY THE HECK- was the guy selling it? (it's the best model of them all) Was something wrong with it? Was it hacked, spoofed, dented or refurbished?
Buy (or rent) Ridge Racer 7. The graphics are awesome. (It was $70 bucks when I bought that game for my son)
The 'border' will also appear on the PSP if you port non-Sony produced media. I think I read there is a way around that.
My son's system has NEVER required any downloaded patch. It's never even been plugged in (hardline or Wi-Fi). If he is required to install a 'patch' it will come on the game disc, which will check for the newest OS patch (which is nothing more than Sony sneaking in more saveguards to their system so you have to buy/rent/use ONLY their stuff).
I think you are expecting too much beyond the premise the system offers: A powerful game platform with a HDD for storage (games, photos, music, etc), BD player, BT controller, and HD output. All the other extraneous stuff is great if you can 'tweek' or hack it. It will not give you a hummer.

Hahaha...my girlfriend read your post over my shoulder and asked "Did he just call you dear?"
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There are a lot of 60gb PS3's on ebay, many of which are scoring a pretty heft price tag. I got mine with a few EA sports games and a second controller (non rumble) for $450. When I received it was dirty and it had a few minor scuffs, but I was able to clean it up pretty nicely. In my communications with the seller, he mentioned that he never plays it and that his son had been slacking in school, so it had to go. Whether that's true or not, it's unmodified and the real deal 60 GB backward compatible machine. All of my old PS2 games play just fine on it. I subscribe to GameFly and I added Ridge Racer 7 to my queue based on your suggestion. I look forward to playing it. Your comment about Sony sneaking in more safeguards with software/firmware updates is only partially true. They have also added quite a few new features, including support for new media types (WMV included) and support for most, if not all of the Blu Ray spec's latest additions. Unfortunately for me, they particular type of WMV I want to play back isn't properly supported. It's not the end of the world, especially since it is also a Blu Ray player and the XBOX 360 will stream these files just fine (with occasional annoying buffering pauses). It'd just be nice if it had worked out. About the hummer thing, I'm still waiting on the next firmware update. You never know... |

Rich, I'm curious what you think about Playstation Plus and the Hulu streaming app they're previewing now. If they can come out with a decent netflix app as well (one that's installed, not from a disc) the PS3 would be my ideal media center.
...Well that and adding .mkv container support. |

Sorry Steve, I only followed the PS3 gaming platform for a while as I bought it for my son (Wow, that was so many years ago). I am not a gamer and do not play video/computer games at all (Then again, I also don't do any Web 2.0 at all, or ever order netflix (have over 1,500 DVD's/HD-DVD's/BD's); so I'm probably the 'weirdee' in all this).
At this point I can only state that the PS3 series is the gold standard of game platforms. The only reason it is not the top seller is that it is the most expensive.
