Topic: Are reality shows sending bad messagesPosted: November 16 2009 at 2:30pm |
i
am teaching a women's studies course at hofstra university and we have recently
been talking about reality television and how they are often misogynist and
send out dangerous messages to girls and young women. the reason i bring this
up is because we learned that a vast majority of people who watch reality shows
are teenage girls and young women between the ages of 18 and 24 and also most
reality shows are produced by men. we're talking about shows such as the
bachelor, rock of love, the girls next door, keeping up with the kardashians,
bad girls club, america's next top model and even shows like american idol and
dancing with the stars. now granted i do not like reality shows to begin with
we have been studying these shows by watching scenes from these shows on tv and
seeing how dehumanizing to women they are. yeah one might argue that these
shows are sexist against men as well but they really aren't. at least the men
on these shows aren't botoxed up or are cosmetically enhanced. and even the
bachelorette is anti-women by showing the female lead as a brainless sex
object. i for one hope for the sake of all womankind that reality shows soon
die a painful death and are put out of their misery once and for all so we can
see shows that are more empowering and less insulting.

Hmmmmmm. My answer to your title question is: Yes.
My response to your post is: First, you are not using the proper word in "misogynist" (a hatred or great prejudice against women) in your depiction of debasing or false portrayals of women. People often make this mistake, as they do with the real meaning of many other words:
"nude" vs "naked" (nude means without clothing, naked means unprotected)
"Ms." (actually means "Miss", the title of an unmarried woman)
"pornography" vs "explicit erotica" (pornography means sexual activity commonly debasing women [rape, subjugation, perverted/unnatural/immoral sexual acts], whereas explicit erotica means graphic depiction of a 'normal' sexual act among consenting adults)
"incorrect" vs "mistaken" vs "wrong"
Not to be mean, but one last personal criticism: How can a Hofstra University teacher come to type without capitalization in no less than 26 occurrences, along with syntax errors?
What exactly is a "Women's study course"? Does it have a central flavor of 'us versus them'? Do you not perpetuate division of the sexes with such a course? If a wrong is before us, can no one express it clearly to the rest so that it ceases? We are all people, we should all treat each other equally according to our particular standing, but certainly equal under the law of common fairness.
In my opinion all these TV shows are junk, they not only send the 'wrong' message to girls and young women, but also to boys and young men. You will notice that mature men and women are not in the aformentioned group; this is because they (hopefully) know better. I'll watch a TV show like Two and a half Men because it is bawdy humor of a completely insane character cast amplified by the wittiest writers. As for the young watching it, I don't think it is appropriate.
It's not that most shows are produced by men, but rather that they (TV producers) have honed in on (and reinforced) what titillates the young impressionable mind (taking over our job as parents via stealthy entertainment). This is all connected to the 'dumbing down' of America; the less informed one is, the more controllable they are. This is also why the functional family unit is so important to the succeful maturing of a society's youth, and hence its nation's future. If left to the immoral greedy, it will dissolve into a form of slavery, which I believe has been happening in this country for some time now. Unbridled greed seems to be the theme of our society now.
Even though on a base plane men are hunters and killers while women are life-givers and nurturers, the immoral greedy have twisted so many elements of society to appease the stupid (the majority of society) while using them, that the majority can no longer tell right from wrong.
Stop TELLING women they are victims (if that is what you do [I remember Hofstra being a very liberal university); SHOW them what they can acheive based in their own abilities. Don't point to the wrong of men unless you can fully explain to ALL (men and women) why it is so. If your stance is solid and pure it can be refuted by no one.

I try to pay attention to who the advertisers are who pay to support terrible TV (Kardashian's and shows of that ilk) and if it can be avoided, I don't ever buy their products.
